First the Pros: Great sounding 2 head deck. The Play Trim adjustment is great for pre-recorded playback of tapes and playing tapes recorded on other decks. It functions as a nice treble boost or cut control. The VU meter is clear and readable from a distance.
The auto calibration seems to work well. I would not say it replaces the accuracy of a three head deck, but for two heads, not bad The Dolby implementation is decent. Track seek works fairly well. Cons: The mechanism is clunky and loud.
The mechanism pushes on the tape around the capstan and pinch roller so that when the tape is stopped and then ejected, the tape is pushed in to the shell just a bit.
Not a deal breaker but not very gentle in my opinion. For a deck that was made late in the game, Yamaha could have added Dolby S. A real time counter would have been nicer. These days people think they are sitting on gold if they have a deck and overprice them.
