My recommendation would be to do this for all of map area you wish to upload to your GPS. Once you have all the map files set that you want to send to your GPS click the button at the top to "Send to Device" and the process will begin to start uploading your newly acquired maps to your GPS.
I was able to upload 24k topo maps for TX and city map update and have a small amount of memory left. If you're decide to go hog wild and download numerous states or areas I would recommend getting an SD card with a few gigabytes of storage on it. It's been a few days since I got everything situated on my Nuvi and so far so good. I've noticed a subtle difference on GPS with additional detail which was not there previously for bodies of water, elevation and so on.

The map download instructions are really easy to understand and will be on screen. If you get stuck Garmin have a very good Support section also online, plus telephone numbers that you can call for some help and assistance. Yes every time. Without the latest maps on your Garmin Nuvi you run the risk of getting lose and never getting anywhere on time. Note: download map now does not always work so see step 4. On my MAC it downloads as an image and not as a zip file so it is easy to place in the folder; this might be different on a PC.
For example, I built maps of all the Southeast Asia countries I wanted to drive through. If this is a map you have purchased then save it your computer. The usual issue is that the Garmin is confused because there is more than one map on the Garmin. Remove that file make a copy of anything you are deleting before deletion as you may need it later. But, before I did that I deleted the old files before deleting I had saved a copy onto my computer.
